Honouring Hekate on the Dark Moon

A Personal Reflection on my work with Hekate

Tell me your story and I will tell you mine of blackened fingers and spells written in rhythm. On this New moon and with the passing of time I claw back my power , I command what is mine. For I see the witch in me and in you. Spinning your story I will show you the clues.

- Channelled message from Hekate

The Dark Moon has always felt different to me. Quieter. Thicker somehow  ,as if the world pauses just long enough for truth to rise to the surface, as the river of emotion pulls us in deep to its shadowy depths.

This is the time I feel Hekate most strongly , when we stand or sit in the liminal, the time  of the in- between , darkness engulfing us like a child in the womb.

When there is no moonlight in the sky, when nothing is being illuminated for us, we are invited inward.  to listen rather than act, to feel rather than explain. And it is here, in this stillness, that Hekate meets us  not to rescue us from the dark, but to walk beside us  with her torches as she does with Persephone  guiding us through the pain ,trauma and  grief that life brings .  with her wisdom and insight she stands at the crossroads with us .

Meeting Hekate at the Crossroads

Hekate is often called the Goddess of Witches, but to me,  hekate is so much more. She is all encompassing and is multifaceted  , one of her aspects is the goddess of thresholds.  Standing at the  crossroads as Hekate Enodia - meaning guide , guiding us on  the visible ones where roads meet, and the invisible ones we face in our inner lives .

Those moments when something is ending but the next step isn’t clear yet. When an old identity no longer fits. When we feel called to change, but don’t yet know how.

Hekate doesn’t demand certainty. She honours honesty and sincerity  to be completely authentic standing in your truth.  asking us to stand where we are, exactly as we are, and acknowledge the choice before us , even if we’re not ready to make it yet. However, acknowledging that in moving forward on our journey in life , there is healing that needs to be done in order for us to become who we are becoming .

Why Hekate Feels So Relevant Right Now

So many of us are in transition in the space of the in-between searching for substance in the what we call game of life . Personally, I see it everywhere ,in conversations, in collective grief, in quiet awakenings that don’t always have language yet as not being able to express the emotions that come flooding through or even how to regulate them.

Old structures are falling away. Beliefs we once relied on no longer hold. There is a deep sense that something is changing, even if we can’t name it.

This is Hekate’s domain.

She teaches us how to move through uncertainty without abandoning ourselves. She reminds us that darkness is not something to fear, it is where transformation begins, think of a child in the womb or a seed being planted . In a world that pressures us to be constantly visible, productive, and “healed,” Hekate offers permission to rest in the in-between.

Why Hekate Is Needed Now

We are living through a time of profound change and let's be honest the world is pretty scary. Old structures are cracking. Many are awakening, grieving, shedding identities, or questioning paths they once walked without hesitation.

Hekate’s energy is deeply needed now because she teaches us how to navigate transition. She helps us sit with discomfort without losing ourselves. She reminds us that transformation is not a failure, it is what is needed and it is a process and not a quick fix like we our led to believe .

In a world that pushes constant visibility, productivity, and light exhausting us to the brink, Hekate calls us back to the wisdom of the dark  where rest, reflection, and truth live , giving us the permission that a lot of us feel we need, to take the time to mediate and focus on our healing instead of the very modern approach of numbing through escapism .

Creating an Altar to Hekate (A Simple, Personal Approach)

My altar to Hekate is not elaborate. It never has been. It’s a space of intention, not performance.

Choose a quiet place  near a doorway, window, or corner that feels slightly liminal. Begin with what you have , sometimes the best tools in witchcraft are what we find then what we buy.

On my altar, I keep:

  • a dark cloth

  • a candle (sometimes three, sometimes one)

  • a key

  • a small bowl for offerings

  • I sometimes like to have a plant on my altar

Over time, the altar changes just as I do. Hekate seems to appreciate that. She meets us where we are, not where we think we should be.

The Symbols of Hekate That Speak to Me Most

The Snake

The snake reminds me that shedding is natural. Necessary, even. When something feels uncomfortable or painful, I try to remember that growth often looks like release before it looks like renewal.

The Torches

Hekate’s torches don’t erase the dark. They simply make it navigable. When clarity feels far away, I imagine her walking ahead, light in hand, reminding me I don’t need to see the whole path , just the next step.

The Key

Hekate offers us the keys of wisdom ,helping us unlock the doors to life's mysteries or unlocking doors to help us release trauma or energy that no longer serves us . it is up to us to take these keys as Hekate will only ever guide us  , never doing the work that ultimately we need to do ourselves.

Offerings and the Meaning of the Crossroads

Traditionally, offerings to Hekate are left at crossroads during the Dark Moon. This practice has always felt deeply symbolic to me.

A crossroads is where we acknowledge transition, however never put yourself  in physical danger when going to a crossroad  .

When we leave offerings there, you can say something like: I release what I no longer need. I trust the guidance unfolding.

Offerings don’t need to be extravagant. Bread, honey, eggs, herbs, water, or a written intention are more than enough. What matters is that once given, they are not taken back , and when you leave the offering we never look back at our offerings as they have been given to  hekate . This act teaches us to surrender something Hekate gently asks of us.

If a physical crossroads isn’t accessible, a doorway or altar works just as well and when getting rid of offerings don't over think it ,sometimes just popping them in the compost is just as symbolic. Never leave offerings that can harm animals at crossroads, always remember to be mindful.

A Dark Moon Ritual with Hekate for Beginners

If you’re new to working with  Hekate, keep it simple , as one thing that Hekate admires is truth and sincerity .

On each Dark Moon:

  • Light a candle

  • Have a key on your Altar and your offerings

  • Sit quietly for a few minutes

  • Journal one question: What is ending, and what is beginning within me?

There’s no rush. No test. Hekate teaches in subtle ways and it may not always be clear at first . Hekate's messages / guidance may come  through intuition, dreams, and moments of quiet knowing sometimes even days after or her messages are multifaceted so they continue to work on you a couple of days , however they are never to be forced just allow yourself  time and space for you to process. Remember the most important advice I can give you as a witch and devotee is to just be yourself , you do you . In other words  your practice is your own .

A Prayer to Hekate for you to use

Hekate, Keeper of Keys, Torchbearer in the dark, Stand with me at this crossroads.

Guide me through what I cannot yet see. Help me release what no longer serves. Teach me to trust the wisdom of my own becoming.

May your light walk beside me, May your protection surround me, And may I step forward with courage and truth.

So it is.

Hail Hekate.

Closing Thoughts

Walking with Hekate has taught me that transformation doesn’t always arrive with clarity  but it always arrives with purpose and truth . She reminds us that we are not lost when we stand in the dark. We are becoming. reclaiming pieces of ourselves that are missing , releasing what no longer is serving us .

On the Dark Moon, when the sky holds no light, I remember this:

I am allowed to pause. I am allowed to release. I am allowed to trust the unseen , knowing that i am supported on my journey.

Walking the Path with Hekate

To honour Hekate is to accept that transformation is not always comfortable ,it is messy and sometimes it is hard   but it is always meaningful and needed . Hekate walks with us through grief, endings, and rebirth, holding the torch steady until we learn to carry our own light.

On the Dark Moon, when the sky is empty and the world grows quiet, she reminds us:

You are not lost. You are becoming.

And that  in itself  is sacred.

Hail the Dark Mother

Hail Hekate
